Last Sunday was our break up party. Thanks to everyone who took part in making our break up such a success. And thanks to those who could not make it, you were there in spirit and not forgotten.
The successful afternoon was the icing on the cake. The real success lay ‘with the taste of the years work’.
Everyone who came brought a couple of paintings to display. Introductions all around and the group spoke about painting histories and paintings.
Students had as little experience as one month while others had been painting for 5, 6 or 10 or more years.
There is a certain clarity revealed when artists put their work in the public arena . In this case displaying to peers. And Sunday was no exception. The variety and scope of the paintings was dramatic. From landscape (urban and country) to portraiture, still life, floral and figure work. The variation of style also was quite diverse and took me by surprise.
While my aim to give students the confidence to expand their stylistic virtuosity. I was still taken aback with the collection gathered together.
I felt humbled by the enthusiasm, dedication and courage displayed by my students in pursuit of their painting.
Some expressed their delight at discovering the experience of painting outdoors.
Others elated at the responses they received from other students about their work. They felt encouraged despite their apprehensive about showing their work.
Others spoke about their motivation to try different things in the work.
The energy and atmosphere of the camaraderie on Sunday was infectious and tangible.
I am so grateful to my beautiful students who teach me what painting is about.
